Galesburg Education Association Press Release: March 5th, 2012
Galesburg Education Association
Press Release: March 5th, 2012
The Galesburg Education Association is horrified by the Governor’s position to devastate the future of our children by the draconian budget cuts he has proposed. Such cuts are irresponsible to education and will condemn the children of our State to a future without the American dream. The leaders of Illinois have failed its children.
Such cuts are magnified by the announcement of budget plans from the Superintendent and his administrative staff. GEA President, Russ Ullrich stated: “It’s hard to understand why we would destroy educational programs with the significant cuts that have already come at the expense of our students only to consider deeper cuts that will impact our community for years to come.” In a time when the rest of the nation is focused on improving Math, Science, and technology skills, the District 205 Administration has eliminated classes in those areas that would have allowed our children to compete in the national market. Future investors to Galesburg will say, “They have shiny, nice looking buildings. Too bad their educational performance isn’t as nice.”
The students, parents, and teachers continue to show support for the four-block system at Galesburg High School and the ‘middle school concept’ at grades 6-8. The effort to be more “efficient” by cutting teachers has already eliminated the cost savings that would have been incurred by a schedule change at GHS. Ullrich added: “We fail to see the argument that we need to cut classes and lay-off teachers when we are hearing how ‘under budget’ the $110,000,000 building project is and see little in Administrative cuts.” The community has been given promises of administrative cuts to “accompany” education reductions, only to see them retracted when it is time for implementation. Education funds are used to pay for items that could be paid from the Building and Operations fund. It is legal for the District to move money from one account to the other as long as the transaction is documented.
Through the board’s decisions, it appears that it is more important as a school district to employ construction workers, than to keep teachers in the classrooms. “When the District is moving forward with building a Field house, Football stadium, and gyms with giant glass walls, and holding tens of millions in reserves, it would appear the District has major priority issues.” The District continues to sidestep educational priorities in lieu of a grand ‘wish list’.
Adopted for credit recovery at Galesburg High School several years ago, an online system referred to as APEX was implemented. The system has been being expanded beyond its original intent. Ullrich cautioned, “As a parent, taxpayer, business owner, and educator, I without a doubt don’t believe this is the direction our community is interested in going.” Replacing teachers with computers may be tempting to a finance person, but to educators it flies in the face of all research and beliefs in what is best for kids. Computers are tools, not replacements for humans in the classrooms.
The education of the students of District 205, deserves at least the same level of priority that is being given to the “Operation Rebuild Achievement”.
Students deserve Teachers AND a safe, healthy environment.
